The original creators wanted you to feel like you were part of the action, and its custom theater environment does just that. While IMAX is known for its massive, wall-to-wall curved screens, it’s more than that. In turn, this produces the clearest, sharpest picture possible. This is a proprietary image enhancement process that goes through each and every frame to optimize the image. IMAX uses DMR (digital image remastering). These cameras can also be rather loud, so they don’t lend themselves to all types of movies. The size of the film itself is so large that an IMAX camera can only hold about three minutes worth at a time.
While most film shoots one frame for every five perforations along a film strip, IMAX is one frame per 15. Shooting on true IMAX film produces the largest image available. That said, there are varying quality cameras, with the smaller ones looking more like widescreen than IMAX. IMAX digital cameras are able to optimize clarity and detail for the big screen. This produces stunning big-screen images with detail that cannot be captured anywhere else.

To produce a movie for IMAX, it must be shot on IMAX digital and film cameras with the largest resolution format available. Invented as a way to give moviegoers a more captivating way to watch movies, it’s been continually improved on over the years to become what it is today. It includes theater seating, immersive sound and stunning visuals.īeyond the immediate theater experience, IMAX also relies on how the camera is used and how the film is shot.

There’s a reason why Cruise made his co-stars endure an intense training regimen, and a big part of the reason why Jay Ellis is so proud of the movie, as someone who grew up as part of a military family. Because even in the normal format, Top Gun: Maverick makes the audience feel like they are in the cockpit, flying alongside Tom Cruise’s Maverick, and the young co-pilots accompanying him on this new mission. So if you can find a theater that has 4DX and ScreenX, you'll get three screens and you'll get the moving chairs and the smoke and the snow and all the stuff that happens with the 4DX experience.

And there's even a version where they do ScreenX plus 4DX. So instead of going vertical, we go horizontal. So on the ScreenX version, you're gonna get an hour of live action side footage as well. I actually had cameras pointing out both sides. Usually on those films, they have to create them in CG and fill it out, or put colors or kind of blurred images. We also are releasing the film in a format called ScreenX, which is a three screen format where the walls of the theater become an image.
